In the session

Pupils meet the ingredients first: whole and ground spices to smell and compare, the utensils used to prepare them, and the methods that turn them into a dish.

Tasting and cooking then follow, with conversation about hospitality, sharing and the place food holds in family and community life.

Tasting and cooking

  • Vegetarian tasting, which may include potatoes and dips, naan, chapattis and other suitable dishes
  • Practical cooking of a simple vegetarian curry
  • Making and cooking chapattis
  • Handling and identifying spices and utensils
