Henna Art & Cultural Traditions
Explore the art of henna, or mehndi, through cultural stories, demonstrations and creative design. Pupils learn about its place in South Asian celebrations before developing patterns of their own.
In the session
The session opens with where henna belongs: weddings, festivals and special occasions across South Asia and beyond, and the role it plays in preparing for a celebration.
Pupils then watch a live application demonstration, seeing how a pattern is built up freehand from simple repeated elements.
The creative half of the session moves to paper, where everyone can design, refine and finish their own work.
What pupils explore
Motifs are discussed as they are used in different communities and occasions, rather than as a single fixed dictionary of meanings.

Practical options
Most pupils take part through design work: individual paper designs, printed templates and collaborative design sheets that can build into a class display.
Small simple applications to the skin may be offered where appropriate and with consent. Face paints can be discussed as an alternative, subject to the same suitability and consent conversation. Paper design activities offer a full route through the workshop without any skin application.
Before you book
Gvants uses natural henna. Any skin application is optional, subject to consent, and agreed with the school in advance. Please discuss ingredients, sensitivities and alternatives when arranging your workshop.

- Does everyone have to have henna applied?
- No. Any skin application is optional and subject to consent, and paper-based design activities are available for everyone taking part.
- Can activities be adapted for different ages and abilities?
- Workshops can be adapted to pupils' ages, abilities and curriculum needs, including SEN groups. Tell us about your group when you enquire and we can talk through what will work.
- Can workshops fit our current RE topic?
- Yes. Sessions are planned with headteachers, RE leads and teaching staff around the topics your pupils are studying.
