Traditional Indian & South Asian Clothing
Discover how clothing can express identity, region, faith and celebration. This colourful workshop combines discussion, textiles and hands-on activities to explore traditional Indian and South Asian dress.
In the session
Real garments are at the centre of the session. Pupils see and handle fabrics, examine embroidery up close and ask the questions that clothing invites: who wears this, when, and why?
Discussion covers origins and changing styles, everyday versus special-occasion clothing, and the regional differences that sit behind the word 'Indian'.
Religious articles of dress are treated with care. The Pagg is presented as part of Sikh identity and tradition, not as a costume.
Garments explored
Each garment is described in its typical contexts, with room for the regional and personal variation that any real wardrobe contains.

Practical activities
Where appropriate, pupils can try selected outfits, watch a turban demonstration or have a turban tied, explore ways of styling a dupatta, examine fabrics and embroidery, design an outfit of their own and create decorative patterns.
Exactly which items are available to try varies by session and group, so it is worth agreeing the practical activities with staff in advance. Throughout, the emphasis is on curiosity, creativity and respect.
Fabrics, colour and meaning
Pupils look closely at fabrics, colours, patterns and embroidery, and consider what clothing can communicate about celebration, region, faith and personal identity — including in their own lives.
